This week's recommended resource is Stress Free Kids. Stress Free Kids' founder, Lori Light, emphasizes the importance of basic but essential techniques like diaphragmatic breathing for stress reduction in children. Diaphragmatic (belly) breathing emphasizes deep breathing from the abdomen, rather than the chest. In this exercise, the child lies down on his back, placing his hand on his belly. The child then takes slow, deep breaths — in through the nose and out through the mouth. These exercises direct attention away from anxious thoughts and feelings by encouraging the child to focus on the comfortingly familiar and simple process of breathing.
Stress Free Kids has a lot of great videos to help relax children who are under stress. Join JFTN staff for our next Parent Meeting, where we'll discuss ways for adults to recognize and cope with stress at an early stage.
